For the second week in a row, the New York Giants lost a player who is expected to help the team in case incumbent quarterback Daniel Jones struggles. Last week against the Cincinnati Bengals defensive end and fifth round draft pick Kayvon Thibedeaux was chop blocked in the second quarter by tight end Thaddeus Moss. An MRI taking the following day revealed a partial tear of his right knee MCL and was expected to miss 3 to 4 weeks. It is unlikely he will suit up when the Giants travel to Tennessee for their home opener.

Last Sunday, with Jones on the bench, backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor started. Taylor had only attempted 4 passes completing 2 for 29 yards. Late in the first quarter, he rolled out to looking for tight end Daniel Bellinger. Taylor never saw them 15-yard completion as he was drilled to the turf by rookie defensive end Michael Clemons. Taylor stayed on the ground writhing in pain before jogging off the field.  He would later go to the medical tent before going to locker room. Came back on the field in  street clothes. Said first year head coach Brian Daboll, “he should be okay. I don’t think it was anything. He just landed hard.”

It gave third string quarterback David Webb an opportunity to continue having a solid per-season. Webb threw for 202 yards, connecting on 30 of 38 passes, 1 touchdown and no interceptions. Unfortunately, the defense gave up 14 fourth quarter points in the 31-27 loss. Said Webb after the game, “this was the best preseason I’ve had. I think that was a credit to the offensive line, coaches and offensive coordinator.” Webb is hooping to land on the 53 man roster as the third quarterback. “It was a lot of fun this preseason. I hope it works out,” he concluded.

Running back Saquan Barkley also sat out the game and continues to say that he is looking forward to a solid year. He did not suit up against the Bengals the week before either. Barkley declared after practice last week, “I’m ready. If l have to compare it to last year, I’m way beyond what was before.”

Barkley had shown flashes of brilliance before injuries derailed his last two seasons. The organization is hoping to stay healthy the entire year.
