The New York Knicks stayed consistent, made shots and came away with a 113-109 win over the Washington Wizards despite first half mishaps Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

New York had trouble holding onto the ball early in the game. The team made corrections and stepped up in defense as Jalen Brunson led the team in scoring with 41 points and eight assists.

“We didn’t play great obviously, but we found a way to win, which is the most important thing,” said Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau.  “Our turnovers were a bit costly.”

It was a close matchup. New York was tied with Washington at 22 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 46-45 at halftime. Brunson led with 16 points and 3 assists.

Thibodeau said they thought turnovers were the problem at the break. “I thought the defense was actually pretty good with the exception of live ball turnovers where we gave up easy baskets,” he said.

New York took heed to those halftime discussions. They had 10 turnovers in the first half and seven in the second half of the game. The Knicks had 40 total defensive rebounds and Isaiah Hartenstein led with 12. The Wizards had 36 defensive rebounds.

OG Anunoby, newly acquired from the Toronto Raptors, led the Knicks in the third quarter with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Brunson added 20 points in the fourth quarter.

“At the end of the game you are trying to win so it is a little different but the approach stays the same,” Brunson said. “You’ve got to have the same attacking mindset but you also have to be smart and know the time, score, situation and things like that so it is a little different but not that much.”

The Knicks take on the Toronto Raptors tonight as they face past teammates RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.
