The Buffalo Bills played like Super Bowl champions in the final NFL divisional playoff game of the Sunday night but their season ended as they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the nail biting 42-36 overtime loss at Arrowhead Stadium.

Both teams played hard defensively in the thriller and scored in crucial moments, especially in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. However, the Bills did not have the opportunity to make a comeback following the coin toss when the score was tied at the end of the game as the Chiefs scored on the only possession..

Bills quarterback Josh Allen completed 27 of 37 attempted passes for 329-yards and threw zero interceptions while competing against Patrick Mahomes and the 2020 Super Bowl champions. Mahomes completed 33 of 44 attempted passes for 378-yards and threw no interceptions.

Buffalo got the ball first and scored as Allen passed to running back Devin Singletary. Kansas City scored next on their first possession when Mahomes ran the ball himself and dove face first into the end zone. Teams were tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored in the second quarter. Mahomes threw to wide receiver Byron Pringle for a touchdown with 1:52 remaining and then Allen threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Gabriel Davis in the final 40 seconds of the quarter. Teams went to halftime tied at 14.

Chiefs Harrison Butker kicked a field goal to start the third quarter. They followed it up with a touchdown as Mahomes handed off to wide receiver Mecole Hardman who ran it in.  The extra point was missed. Allen then threw to Davis for another touchdown. The Bills trailed 23-21 at the end of the quarter.

Butker’s field goal earned three more points for the Chiefs with less than nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Buffalo pushed past Kansas City and brought the score to 29-26 when Allen next threw to Davis for a touchdown and then threw to wide receiver Stefon Diggs for a two-point conversion with less than two minutes to go. The Chiefs took back the lead with a touchdown pass from Mahomes to wide receiver Tyreek Hill with about a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.

17 seconds remained in the fourth quarter when Allen threw another touchdown pass to Davis. The extra point by K Tyler Bass brought the score to 36-33. Chiefs made an incredible comeback with 13 seconds left in the quarter. Determined, Mahomes first connects with Hill for 29 yards. He follows that up with a 25-yard strike to tight end Travis Kelce. Butker then kicks a 49-yard field sending the game into overtime.

Mahomes never allowed Allen and the Bills to get back on the field as the Chiefs won the coin toss. 9 plays and 75 yards later, Mahomes finds Kelce in the back of the end zone for the 8-yard winning touchdown.

The Chiefs will now host the AFC championship game (the fourth year in a row) as they look to get to the Super Bowl (for the third year in a row) against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday 3pm.
