The New York Football Giants organization took a huge gamble entering the 2022-23 season letting quarterback Daniel Jones and running back play the entire season on the final year of their contract. The organization cleaned house by bringing a new General Manager in Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll. The team had not made the playoffs since 2016. By end of last season, Big Blue finished the season with a winning record at 9-7-1, making the playoffs as a wild card team. They faced the Minnesota Vikings, the same team they lost to on the road Christmas Eve 27-24 when Vikings Greg Joseph boomed a 61-yard field goal as time expired. As devastating as the loss was, it gave the Giants extreme confidence when they faced the Vikings three weeks later in their first round playoff game.

The Giants got revenge, coming away with a 31-24 victory. Jones, making his first playoff start, threw completed 24 of 35 passes for 301 yards and 2 touchdowns. Barkley only ran for 53 yards but got into the end zone twice. Unfortunately, their season would end the following week when they faced the eventual NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles 38-7.

Jones had his best year of his Giants career, throwing for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns (the second best as he threw for 24 in 2019) finishing with a 92.5 rating. Barkley, who has been injury prone since being drafted, played in 16 of 17 games rushing for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns. Daboll was named the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year and is the first person to win both Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year (as the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills).

Both Jones and Barkley signed new deals. Jones will make in the next three years $47.1 million, $41.6 million and $58.8 million. Barkley’s deal is much less as he signed just a 1-year deal. He got a $2 million up-front signing bonus and has $1 million available in incentives. All told, Barkley can make upwards of $11 million.

The New York Giants open up the 2023 season when they host their bitter rival Dallas Cowboys Sunday night, September 10th on prime time television. The Boys finished last year with a 12-5 record, winning their first playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14. Dallas would lose their second round playoff game to the San Fransisco 49ers 23-17 in a very frustrating way. Quarterback Dak Prescott failing to get the final play off as time ran out.

As usual, the Cowboys, are expectng to go deep in the playoffs. After last year, the Giants are hoping for the same. They are tied with the Patriots and Cowboys for the third-toughest schedule. Aside from their division rivals, they play at San Fransisco, Miami, Buffalo, Las Vegas and New Orleans as well as hosting newly acquired Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets who they lost to in their annual pre-season match up.

The New York Giants brought into Brian Daboll’s philosophy. Jones showed he can lead the offense with his arm and legs while Barkley showed he can be an effective running back, catching the ball out of the back field. Add a defense that was ranked the 4th best and Big Blue can make waves in the 2023-24 season.
