The New York Giants fell to 0-3 after a 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium.
New York was able to compete with Kansas City, as the Chiefs made several errors in the game, but the Giant’s one touchdown and one field goal wouldn’t be enough. New York was missing their starting kicker, needed to score more to make an impact in the game and also made mistakes.
“I thought we battled defensively,” said Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll following the game. “Thought we did a good job in the kicking game and fell short offensively.”
The Giants received first, but was scoreless in the first quarter. The single touchdown was in the second quarter. Russell Wilson handed the ball to running back Cameron Skattebo with about 1:49 remaining. Skattebo ran 13 yards for a touchdown and celebrated in the end zone with a backflip.
“I thought the line did a great job run blocking on that one and him getting into the end zone,” Wilson said. “It was a good play.”
“Cam is a tough competitor,” Coach Daboll said about the touchdown. “Thought he ran hard. Thought he did a good job in the passing game when he got the ball.”
The attempt at the extra point by punter Jamie Gillan was blocked by Chiefs defensive end Ashton Gillotte.
New York did not score again until the fourth quarter. Giants kicker Graham Gano was injured before the game.
“He was out there kicking and got a groin so he couldn’t go first half,” Coach Daboll said about the kicker.
He was ready by the last quarter and kicked a 25-yard field goal with about 10:15 minutes remaining in the game.
Outside Linebacker Brian Burns admitted the lack of a kicker does put some pressure on the defense. “We just got to get it done,” Burns said about preparing for next week’s game with the possibility of Gano still being injured. “Just because we’re going to be put in situations where we have to go for it and they’re going to depend on the defense to get stopped, but like I said, we’re paid to stop the offense.
Giants defense made 39 total tackles, made two sacks, and forced one fumble. The Chiefs made 33 tackles and had two sacks.
Russell Wilson completed 18 of 32 passes for 160 yards and threw two interceptions. Mahomes threw 32 of 37 for 224 yards.
The Giants next face the Los Angeles Chargers at home Sunday. It was announced Tuesday afternoon that Wilson will be benched in favor of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
