Judge Returns To Struggling Yankees

The New York Yankees could not get out of Miami fast enough. After getting swept by the Marlings that began with a very embarrasing loss 13-12 last Friday night. The Bronx Bombers went ahead 12-10 going into the 10th inning. The newly acquired bullpen could not come away with the win giving up 3 runs. The next day, their bats went silent as they managed only 2 hits in the 2-0 loss. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr gets doubled off first base on a routine pop up to the Marlins second baseman. Manager Aaron Boone not only had words for Chisholm but was also seen taking the first base coach Travis Chapman to task as well.
Sunday saw last year’s Rookie of the Year Luis Gil make his season debut witht the team hoping to leave Miami on a good note. Gil was coming off a season in which he recorded a 15-7 record behind a 3.50 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Unfortunately for Gil, he could not pick up where he left off last year. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings allowing five hits and five runs in a 7-3 loss to the Marlins. It was the first Miami swept New York in the history of the franchise. Said Boone of Gil’s performance after, “obviously, a struggle. Just no real command today. He flashed some of his stuff. I thought he did some good things down in the zone at times, especially with some of their lefties. But too inconsistent with the strike throwing and (it) got to be a long day for him.”
The Yankees limped out of Miami and traveled to Texas to take on the Rangers Monday night sending their ace Max Fried to the mound hoping to break the losing streak. Fried entered the game with a 12-4 record with a ERA of 2.78. In his 5 innings, Fried walked 3 and gave up 8 hits, striking out 7. The Yankees took a 5-4 lead going into the ninth inning as first baseman Paul Goldschmidt broke out of his 2-24 slump in a big way. Goldy led off the game with a home run. He followed that up with double in the second inning and singled in the fourth. It was the first time Goldschmidt batted first since July 19th.
With the game tied at 5, the Yankees failed to score in the top of the 10th. Rangers Josh Jung, who had been struggling himself, blast a 3-run walkoff home run in the 8-5 win. The Yankees losing streak extended to 4 games. New York has lost 12 of their last 19 games and Boone sees how the losing is affecting the team. “It doesn’t matter, though,” he said. “It doesn’t matter. We’ve got to win, period. We know that. Nobody cares how stressful it is. That’s all just noise, excuses, whatever.”
With a record of 60-53, the Yankees saw their lead over the Rangers for the final Wild Card spot in the American League shrink to 1 1/2 games.They fell to 5 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East and 2 1/2 games behind the surging Red Sox for second in the division with 49 games to go.
If there is a silver lining coming out of the clubhouse it is news that captain Aaron Judge was due to return to the line-up Tuesday night after being placed on the 10 day injured list with a strained flexor in his right elbow. As the Yankees were getting swept in Maimi, Judge took swings in Tampa against Yankees minor league pitchers two days in a row. It was not known if he would return to his position in right field or would be penciled in as the designated hitter. In any event, his return woiuld help the moral of the team. At the time of his injury, Judge was leading the majors with a .342 batting average with 37 home runs and 85 RBIs.
