A breakup, not gang violence or street crime, landed the latest shooting suspect in Minneapolis police custody. Authorities say Eddie James Freeman, 23, went on a dangerous spree after his girlfriend ended their relationship while driving on I-94.
On the night of Sept. 21, police responded to a car crash at I-94 and Dowling Avenue just after 10 p.m. When Minnesota State Troopers arrived, Freeman allegedly opened fire on them without warning. According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, Trooper Mark Vande Steeg had his squad car lights and sirens on as he approached. Freeman then allegedly aimed at the vehicle, prompting Steeg to return fire. No injuries were reported.
Freeman was arrested at the scene after allegedly discarding his weapon and spitting in an officer’s face. Investigators later learned that Freeman’s ex-girlfriend had been driving when she told him she wanted to break up. She claimed he grabbed the steering wheel, causing the crash, and then began shooting after exiting the vehicle. Freeman now faces multiple assault charges, including first-degree assault on a peace officer, and is being held on $300,000 bond.
