The New York Knicks had the Philadelphia 76ers right where they wanted them after coming away with a game 4 victory on the road. New York was hoping the momentum would carry over to game 5 as the series shifted back to Madison Square Garden Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Knicks, they failed to put the game away blowing a 6-point lead with just .28.2 seconds left in regulation after a Miles McBride jumper out them up 96-90. Behind clutch, Reggie Miller like shooting, from Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia outscored the Knicks 7-1 tying the game at 97 forcing the first overtime of the series.
With New York up by 3, 97-94 with .8.1 seconds left, Maxie brings the ball past half court taking a pick from Joel Embiid. The Knicks could have fouled Maxey but he was so far out from the basket, they were stunned when he pulled up for the 34-foot shot. They were further shocked when the shot went in. Said head coach Tom Thibodeau afterwards of not trying to fouls Maxey, “we could have,” he began. “We’ll leave it at that. Everyone has to be alert and aware as to what we’re doing. It’s frustrating.”
Still, the Knicks put themselves in the position to end the series as Jalen Brunson scores the first 5-points in overtime giving them a 102-97 lead. It was all downhill from there for New York. They watched as the Sixers closed out the game on a 15-4 run coming away with 112-106 win forcing a game 6 Thursday night In Philadelphia. The Knicks did not help themselves missing free throws and turning the ball over.
Maxey finished with a game high 46 points followed by Embiid and Tobias Harris with 19 each. Brunson led the Knicks with 40 points, Josh Hart 18, OG Anunuoby 17 and McBride 14 points off the bench.
“We can’t hang our heads,” said Brunson. “We gotta come back stronger, be ready to go and just learn from what we did.”
The Knicks stole game two and saw the Sixers steal game 5. Both teams have shown they could win on the road. The Knicks have 2 chances to advance to the next round as game 7 would be back at Madison Sqaure Garden should they lose game 6 Thursday night.
They are hoping it will not come down to a game 7 as anything can happen. New York will be looking to advance to the next round for the first time since 1999.
