The Yankees won another series last week, this time against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team has improved its play in the past few weeks, and have retaken 4th place from the Red Sox.

In the first game of the series, Gerrit Cole produced another quality start. Cole is the favorite to win this year’s Cy Young, the first of his career. The team was down 2 heading into the top of the 9th, but a 4 run rally sparked by 2 Pittsburgh errors gave New York the lead, and they won 7-5.

In game 2 Luke Weaver made his Yankee debut, pitching 4 innings and allowing 3 runs with 7 strikeouts. Esteven Florial put the Yankees on top early with a 2 run single. The bullpen threw 5 perfect innings to keep Pittsburgh at bay and New York won 6-3.

In game 3, Carlos Rodon took the mound, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings with 10 strikeouts. But the Yankees’ offense was kept in check, as they produced only 4 hits. After a homer from Anthony Volpe to tie the game in the 7th, Pittsburgh added another run and closed out New York, winning 3-2.

New York now looks ahead to their 3 game series against the Blue Jays which began this past Tuesday. With their season and playoff hopes on the line, New York must sweep the 3rd place Jays to stay in the race. They then host the Arizona Diamondbacks for 3 games which began Friday night.
