It was a competitive hard fought match, but Novak Djokovic of Serbia outlasted Daniil Medvedev of Russia three straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to claim the 2023 Men’s Singles Championship Sunday at the U.S. Open.
Djokovic and Medvedev faced off against each other for the second time at the Open for the Men’s Single Championship match, the last time in 2021 when Medvedev claimed the victory. Djokovic redeemed the loss and his win makes it 24 major championships, for 36-year-old, now tied with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles titles in tennis history.
“It obviously means the world to me,” he said in his on stage interview following the match. “I’m really living my childhood dream to compete at the highest level in the sport that has given me and my family so much coming from very difficult circumstances and adversities.”
Djokovic won the first two games in the first set as he fired strong shots to the edges of the court and at the net. The second game was met with unanswered points by Medvedev. Medvedev warmed up as both players battled for the points. The competition went to tiebreaker in the second set, when Medvedev won five points but Djokovic seven. Djokovic was ahead two sets after an hour and 45 minutes.
“In general, yeah, second set was the best set I played and I didn’t win it,” Medvedev said in the press conference following the match. “So that’s why I kind of, I would say, it’s normal that the match went that way, because first an third he was kind of better and not much to say. Second if I would win it maybe could have been a different game.”
The third set moved a lot faster as Djokovic claimed the victory.
“Yeah, I think he was probably a better player in the second set,” Djokovic said about Medvedev. “He deserved to win that set more than I did. Somehow, I managed to turn things around in the tiebreak. When it mattered, I put one ball into play more than he did and that was enough. And after that, you know, set break, I regained my energy.”
Following the match Djokovic put on a tee-shirt with a picture of him and Kobe Bryant on the front and number 24 in the back, in honor Bryant’s jersey number and his own 24th grand slam. Djokovic said he would talk to Bryant when he was trying to make a comeback in tennis. “He was one of the people I relied on the most,” Djokovic said.
Like Coco, Novak received $3,000,000 for winning the tournament.
