Pathetic, disgusting and sorry! Those are some of the words that sum up the New York Football Giants when they hosted the Dallas “Americas Team” Cowboys Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd. Making matters worse, (if that is possible) the whole country witnessed the Boys 40-0 thrashing as the game was played on national television aired by NBC.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, fresh off a career year in 2022, in which he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in 2016, did not look or play like he signed a new contract in the off season that will earn him more the $146 million over the next 3-years. His running back teammate, Saquan Barkley signed a 1-year deal that could get him close to $11 million. Both played like they had never been on a football field. Jones was suffocated all night by the Dallas defense. He finished his night completing 15-28 passes for 104 yards, getting sacked 7 times, throwing 2 interceptions. Barkley ran for a dismal 51 yards on 12 carries.
On the opening drive for Big Blue, Jones moved the team down into field goal range and watched as Graham Gano attempted a 45-yard field goal. The kicked was blocked by Juanyeh Thomas and was scooped up by Noah Igbinoghene who returned it 58 yards for the touchdown. It was all downhill from there. With Dallas up 9-0 after a Brandon Aubrey 21-yard field goal, Jones throws a short pass to Barkley coming out of the backfield. He is quickly blasted by cornerback Trevon Diggs as the ball pops out and snatched DaRon Bland who races 22 yards to the end zone. Game, set match.
Said Giants head coach Brian Daboll afterwards, “it’s one game. It wasn’t a good game. I won’t sugarcoat it. We got a lot to learn from, a lot of work to do.”
This is how Jones evaluated himself. “Didn’t execute well enough, didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game, and we got to own that. We’re frustrated and disappointed in how we performed tonight and l know certainly am with myself.”
The New York Football Giants look to regroup when they travel west Sunday to face the Arizona Cardinals who lost to the Washington Commanders 20-16.
