Detroit Lions quarterback Adrian Martinez scored the go-ahead touchdown off a 1-yard quarterback sneak leaving 1:51 in regulation as the Lions defeated the New York Giants 21-16 in their preseason match on Friday, August 11, in the Motor City.
New York led 13 – 3 going into the third quarter and had two interceptions on Detroit, but that’s when the Lions had a turnaround performance. A 95 yard punt return touchdown by Maurice Alexander, plus a two point conversion, followed by a field goal and Martinez’s last minute touchdown led to Detroit’s win.
Martinez, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas State, finished the game with five carries for 14 yards in rushing and completed four of seven attempted passes for 37 yards. Lions’ quarterback Nate Sudfeld finished with 15 of 28 passes for 194 yards and two interceptions.
Quarterback Tommy Devito, an undrafted rookie who played football in high-school near East Rutherford at Don Bosco Prep, led the Giants’ offense, throwing 15 of 24 attempted passes for 155 yards with a touchdown pass and one interception. Devito threw his first NFL touchdown pass to fellow Don Bosco Prep alum, tight-end Tommy Sweeney, with 4:55 left to play in the first half to give the Giants a 13-3 lead. Giants’ kicker, Graham Gano, kicked three 40+ yard field goals in the game.
2:05 minutes into the third quarter, Maurice Alexander had a 95 yard punt return touchdown for the Lions to bring them within two points, followed by a successful two-point conversion from the Detroit offense. The Lions took a one point lead off a John Parker 28 yard field goal with 3:16 left in the quarter.
The Giants next face the Carolina Panthers Friday, August 18, at home in week two of the NFL Preseason.
