The Yankees’ playoff hopes continued to dwindle away, as the team dropped another series, this time to the Miami Marlins.
New York’s three-game series against Miami over the weekend ended in two losses and one win in Miami.
Game 1 saw the Yanks thrash Miami 9-4, with Anthony Volpe hitting a three-run homer in the 2nd inning to give New York an early edge. Kyle Higashioka had a great game, hitting three in four times at bat with 2 rbis and 1 run. The bullpen was able to toss three and a third perfect innings to keep Miami at bay.
Game 2 was a low scoring affair, as the Marlins won 3-1, with New York producing zero extra base hits. The bats were almost completely shut down by reigning Cy Young winner for the National League, Sandy Alcantara, who pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts. The one bright spot in the game for New York was rookie Jhony Brito’s performance, as he backed up starter Michael King, throwing five innings and allowing only one run with six strikeouts.
In Game 3, the Yankees had a commanding 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th, but Miami stormed back, loading the bases with one out. A costly error by Yankees pitcher Clay Holmes, and a triple by Marlins’ Luis Arraez, tied the game at seven. Arraez was then driven in by a walk-off single from the bat of Marlins Jake Burger, and Miami won 8-7.
Unsuccessful trades and untimely injuries have been the main thorn in New York’s side as of late, but the drop off in offensive production from many key players, like Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton, has also been detrimental.
