Ben Simmons played well in his on-court return to Wells Fargo Center
in Philadelphia for the first time as an opposing player, but the
defense of the Brooklyn Nets was effortless at times, and the team was
embarrassed 115-106. The Philadelphia 76ers were without their
top-three scorers in the early season, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and
James Harden, but it didn’t stop the 76ers from getting the win, led
by Tobias Harris with 24 points. In his second game after his
suspension, Kyrie Irving led the team with 23 points. Kevin Durant
added 22, while Simmons had 11 points, rebounds, and a season-high 11
assists.
Brooklyn head coach Jacque Vaughn criticized his team’s lack of
effort, particularly on the boards, where the team was out rebounded by
13, giving up 20 offensive rebounds.
“It’s really a mentality of us deciding that we’re going to play
defense,” he expressed. “We can score the basketball. We have
individual talent. We’re learning how to play together on the
offensive end of the floor. We had too many mistakes at halftime. The
amount of mistakes that we had at halftime was baffling for this group
— almost to the point where we had to stop the tape because we didn’t
have enough time left to show them all.”
A visibly upset Kevin Durant also discussed the lack of effort.
“This is the same (expletive),” Durant said in frustration while
reading the box score. Twenty more shots than us and seven more
3-pointers,” he pointed out.
