It was the third time that saw UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic (20-3) defend his title against Daniel Cormier (22-3)—the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion last Saturday night in Las Vegas. It was the third time the two have met in the octagon and Cormier’s final fight in the UFC. After a five-round war, Miocic won by unanimous decision, cementing himself as the greatest heavyweight to ever fight in the UFC. Cormier, who took a finger to his left eye, completed the fight but was clearly having problems seeing out of the eye. Afterwards, Cormier announced that he would retire. “I’m not interested in fighting for anything but titles and I don’t imagine there’s going to be a title in the future,” he said. “That will be it for me. I’ve had a long run, it’s been great, I just fought my last fight for a heavyweight championship and it was a pretty good fight.” Miocic improved his record to 20-3.
While UFC President Dana White touted Francis Ngannou as the next heavyweight opponent to get a shot at the title, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones made it known he wants a shot at the title.
In the co-main event, “Sugar” Sean O’Malley (12-1) has been on the hype train ever since his impressive KO win on the Dana White Contender Series in 2017. Then, the 25-year old racked up three consecutive wins—two of which were in 2020. He faced his toughest challenge this past weekend against Marlon “Chito” Vera (16-6), a contender who has never been finished in the UFC.
Vera defeated O’Malley at the end of the first round, but there was controversy as “Sugar” suffered a foot injury early on in the fight. Whether “Chito” caused the injury or not is still up for debate. Regardless, many fans believe a rematch should occur once O’Malley is healthy again.
