Lt was a whirlwind week for New York Football Giants quarterback Jamies Winston. It all began when starting quarterback Jaxson Dart went down with a knee injury in game 2 against the Rams on the team’s first possession. Winston came in and the results were downright ugly. Winston looked like deer in headlights in the 28-6 loss. He didn’t look much better the following week but the team came away with a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans. For the second week in a row, Winston fails to get the Giants into the end zone. The organization then went out and trade for JJ McCarthy putting Jamie’s on notice. First year head coach committed to Winston announcing he would be the starter when they hosted the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday at MetLife Stadium. It paid off.
In the Giants 36-24 win, Winston completed 18 of 29 passes for 250 and 3 touchdowns to 3 different receivers. Wide receiver Malik Nabers was Winston’s main target as he hauled in 6 catches for 112 yards. Said first year head coach John Harbaugh of the win, “great locker room after the game. Really, really fun to be a part of that. That’s what winning is. That’s what winning teams do. They find a way to win games.”
It was an up and down game for Big Blue as they started off slow on both sides of the ball. Arizona took a 14-3 lead after the 1st quarter behind quarterback Jacoby Brissett (21-35, 166 yards, 2td’s, 3 int’s). The Giants made adjustments in the second quarter outscoring the Cards 16-3 taking a 19-7 halftime lead. The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter with the Giant holding on to a 27-24 lead going into the final quarter.
A New York field goal gave Big Blue a 6-point lead (30-24) with Arizona needing a touchdown to steal the victory. That’s when the defense stepped up in a big way courtesy of corner back Deonte Banks.
Banks had previously been called for pass interference giving Arizona the ball on the Giants 4-yard line. Brissette looks for wide receiver Michael Wilson Banks steps in front of the pass and races 98 yards for the game clinching score. “They was giving me a tight end and a receiver set all day,” Banks began. “I’ve been thinking slant all day and they haven’t been giving it to me. That time l just knew they were going to give it to me. It was just a matter of time because they kept running it. I knew l was going to take it in”
The New York Football Giants are now in 1st place for the first time since 2015. It is also the first time they are 3-0 for the first time since Dan Reeves was the head coach in 1993.
The Giants travel Sunday when they face division rival Washington Commanders who lost abroad in London to the Indianapolis Colts 30-13
