Judge Out For Round One

When the New York Yankees hosted their hated and division rival Boston Red Sox In the first round of the playoffs Tuesday night, they were hoping 2 time MVP Aaron Judge would have overcome his calf injury and be in the starting line-up. Unfortunately, Judge did not and the team did not include him on the post season roster. Judge felt he could play but the team took the safe route hoping he would be available if they advance to the next round. The Bronx Bombers did include often injured Giancarlo Stanton on the roster hoping he could add some much needed offense.
Meanwhile at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the New York Liberty that same night were looking to win their first round playoff series against the Minnesota Lynx. The #8 seed Liberty took game 1 on the road against the #1 seed Lynx 91-75 as New York’s Breanna Stewart scored 34 points, pulling down 12 rebounds. It was the first time a #1 would lose to a #8 seed. If the Liberty advances, they would take on the winner of the Atlanta Dream and Washington Mystics. The Dream won game one 92-77.
Cam Schlitter started for the Yankees Tuesday night and is expected to take home the American League Cy Young award. He finished the year with a 14-6 record with a 1.95 ERA string out 239 and a WHIP of 0.92. The Red Sox, who got off to a very slow start, rallied in the second half of the year after firing manager Alex Cora. Boston is looking for revenge after losing the the Yankees last year in the playoffs.
A year after the Liberty won the WNBA Championship, they were bounced in the first round of the playoffs last year. The team decided to not renew the contract of head coach Sandy Brondello. The organization hired Chris DeMarco who was with the Golden State Warriors for 14 years, 11 as an assistant coach. Demarco guided them to a third place finish with a 26-18 record.
New York City is still celebrating and beaming as the New York Knicks ended a 53 year brought when they won the NBA Championship in 5 games over the San Antonio Spurs. Both the Yankees and Liberty hope they can continue the magic in their playoff series.
