The New York Jets gave up their lead in the fourth quarter and were unable to score in the last seconds of the game, before they lost 38-33 to the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday afternoon at MetLife stadium.

The Jets fixed early first quarter scoring struggles to have a competitive close matchup against the Raiders. New York’s offense made impressive plays including connections between Quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, but the team faced costly penalties and missed opportunities to score.

“We’re all disappointed in the way this one ended with not getting a victory,” said New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn. “I thought the offense did a really good job of moving the ball.”

He felt the teams’ defense and special teams needed to make improvements. “We can’t have critical penalties in situations we can’t have them, and that’s third down for the most part,” he said.

New York had six penalties Sunday and Las Vegas had five. The Jets fought for a touchdown in the first quarter, but kicker Jason Sanders made two field goals. New York trailed 7-6 going into the second. Smith found wide receiver Isaiah Williams for an 18-yard touchdown to start the quarter. Smith next connected with Mitchell for 12 yards for a touchdown. Mitchell, in addition, caught 7 of 9 passes for 142 yards a caught a 47-yard pass in the 4th.

“We worked that play during the week,” he said. “Geno threw the ball and a great ball.”

Sanders kicked a 39-yard field goal for the Jets at the end of the second quarter as they led 23-14 at halftime. New York remained ahead in the third quarter as running back Braelon Allen rushed for a 21-yard touchdown. The Jets led 30-28 going into the fourth.

The Raiders scored early, but Sanders kicked another field goal as the Jets trailed 35-33. New York had the ball with about 14 seconds left in the game when Smith’s pass was intercepted by Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn.

Smith completed 20-of-32 passes for 290 yards and threw two touchdowns and one interception. “I think AD had a great game,” Smith said about his connections with Mitchell. “I thought the receivers in general, they all played well, but again,we’re looking for wins, so it wasn’t enough.”

Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins finished 19-of-26 for 247 yards. He threw three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

The Jets next face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road.

“We trust in the head coach, we trust the offensive coordinator, the keys to victory that they give us,” Mitchell said about preparations for their next matchup.

New York’s record fell to 2-6 following the game.
