Ranked #5 in the nation St John’s University Men’s Basketball team failed their first big exam of the season Saturday at Madison Square Garden losing to #15th ranked University of Alabama 103-96. St John’s falls to 1-1 as they won their first game 108-74 against Quinnipiac who they were heavy favorites against. St John’s was upset in March’s NCAA Tournament in the second round as a number two seed, falling to 10th seed University of Arkansas.
On Saturday against Alabama at the Garden, Big East preseason player of the year Zuby Ejiofor scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. First year St Johns player Bryce Hopkins had 19 points and Ozyiah Sellars, who is also in his first year at St John’s scored 14 points as well. “Anytime you lose you are disappointed, but they were a better team than us tonight,” St Johns Head Coach Rick Pitino said after the game. “We could not guard them off the dribble. Very few teams can. They’ve got excellent offensive talent. We play these early games so we can find out where we need to get better, and obviously we know we need to get better at one-on-one defense.”
