The New York Knicks are in third place, with 47 wins in the NBA Eastern Conference Standings, after their sixth win in a row, a 145-113 victory over the Washington Wizards Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.
Karl-Anthony Towns had his 50th league-leading double-double of the season from 26 points and 16 rebounds, Jalen Brunson added 23 points and Mitchell Robinson also had double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win. The teams’ rebounding, persistence with 3-pointers, and accuracy with free throws made the difference.
“Good win by our guys,” said Head Coach Mike Brown. “I thought that they did a lot of good things on both ends of the floor.”
New York out rebounded Washington 48 to 28, made almost 95% of their free throws and made 17 of 32 their 3-pointers.
“Tonight I thought our ability to take good 3s was huge,” Coach Brown said. “We didn’t get up enough. We took 32 and we like to get closer to 40.”
Tyler Kolek also stood out in the win. Earlier in the day he contributed 42 points and 11 assists for the Westchester Knicks in a NBA G League game. He later added 11 points for the Knicks in their match up against the Wizards.
New York was ahead of Washington 32-27 at the end of the first quarter, 68-52 at halftime, and led 105-81 going into the third quarter.
The Wizards played without multiple injured players including Trae Young and Anthony Davis. They are second to last in the Eastern Conference standings. The Wizards tied the game once at 38 in the second quarter, but trailed the rest of the game.
“We went zone a little bit too in the 4th,” said Wizards Head Coach Brian Keefe about their style of play.
He said the intent was to keep the Knicks out of the paint.
“Give them credit they made some shots, but our guys battled,” he added.
Jaden Hardy led Washington with 25 points, landing seven 3-pointers for his team. The Wizards had better accuracy with their 3-pointers in the second half of the game, landing about 48% of their attempted shots, compared to about 29% in the first half.
“Our process was right,” Coach Keefe said about the Wizards’ 3-pointer consistency:
The Knicks face the New Orleans Pelicans this evening at Madison Square Garden.
