A Marine Corps veteran’s hatred for those who do not enlist or serve — especially students — could have motivated the 2018 shooting inside a bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which left 12 people dead, a report says.

A country-themed night for college students was well underway when Ian David Long, a former machine-gunner in the Marine Corps, opened fire inside Borderline Bar and Grill the night of Nov. 7, 2018. Police said the shooter fatally struck 11 people, including seven college students, before turning the firearm on himself.

According to a 400-page report from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by NBC News on Thursday, Long was likely inspired to carry out the attack by his “strong disdain for civilians, or individuals not associated with any branch of the U.S. military.”

“More specifically, it was discovered that the suspect did not like college students,” the report said.
