Tough Decisions For Daboll

Understandably, there was no champagne popping. No confetti coming from the sky. No high fives or chest bumping. The New York Football Giants finished their pre-season undefeated after taking out the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium last Thursday night. They began by taking out the Buffalo Bills on the road. They followed that up by beating the team they share the stadium with, the New York Jets. When they took the field against New New England, quarterback Russell Wilson, who will be the starting quarterback when the team opens on the road Sunday September 7th, did not play. Jaxson Dart, who had a sharp pre-season started and put an exclamation point on his pre-season.
The 25th pick in this year’s draft, Dart wasted no time as he threw for a touchdown on the teams opening drive. By the time his night was done, Dart completed 6 of 12 passes for 81 yards and 1 touchdown. It remains to be seen if head coach Brian Daboll will choose Dart or veteran Jamies Winston as the #2 quarterback. Fan favorite and almost forgotten Tommy DeVito had a solid outing. “Tommy Cutlet” completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 42-10 rout. Winston, in limited action finished his day throwing for 47 yards, completing 4 of 8 passes, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
Now comes the hard part for Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen who have to cut the roster down to 53 players before opening day. Said Daboll, “we’re trying to build something but these next couple of days are tough. Tough on the players and tough on the personnel staff, the coaching staff, because this is relationship business.”
Tuesday morning the Giants announced they have parted ways with fan popular quarterback DeVito who was an undrafted rookie in 2023. He won 3 straight games but injuries took its toll in 2024. Week 13 he missed the game against Dallas with a sore right forearm and week 15 he was concussed against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Washington Commanders shocked the NFC last year making it all the to the championship game only to lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Big Blue will have their work cut out for them. Things won’t get any easier as the following game has them on the road again when they travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys.
