The New York Giants were slow to score in their 29-21 loss to the Washington Commanders in the MetLife Stadium Sunday on a cold afternoon, still wet from the earlier snowfall.
New York’s defense shined with 60 combined tackles and assists compared to Washington’s 54, while Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw two touchdowns for the offense. The New York Giants had favorable plays, but failed to take advantage of opportunities at crucial moments. “I take accountability for this one,” Dart said about the inability to tie the score when close to 2:38 remained in the game. “I didn’t play well enough today for this team to win, so I’ve got to be better, especially in that situation.”
This was a critical moment for the Giants to improve their score and tie the game with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, but the passes were not connecting. Dart took on the responsibility, yet Giants Interim Head Coach Mike Kafka acknowledged the team must continue to improve. “We made some plays,” he said. “They made more at the end of the day. I think our guys just gotta keep on battling, keep on fighting.”
The Giants trailed 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. Kicker Younghoe Koo attempted a field goal during New York’s first possession, but it was unsuccessful. New York was not on the scoreboard until 3:43 was left in the second quarter, when Dart handed the ball to running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., who ran for a 12-yard touchdown. Koo converted the extra point. The Giants trailed 22-7 going into half time. Dart found Tracy in the end zone for another touchdown with 11:55 remained in the third quarter. New York trailed 22-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Giants safety Dane Belton sacked Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota causing a fumble that outside linebacker Brian Burns recovered. Dart found wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown during the Giants’ following possession. The The Giants were unable to score on their following possession.
Dart completed 20 of 36 passes for 246 yards and threw one interception. Mariota finished with 10 of 19 passes for 211 yards and threw one touchdown and zero interceptions.
It was announced that Dart was injured in the fourth quarter as he left the field, but returned shortly afterwards. “I’m not sure what the official said, but the official was the one that asked him to be evaluated, but he was fine,” said Coach Kafka. He said Dart will continue to play when he was asked about the potential of the other quarterbacks playing. “Jaxson will roll as long as he’s healthy,” he said.
The Giants now 2-12 in the NFC East return home to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
