On Sunday afternoon, the Giants blew the best feel-good vibes they’ve had in over a decade with a sudden collapse for the ages. They entered the fourth quarter leading 19-0 and lost by the final score of 33-32.
After falling behind 30-26 with 1:51 remaining in the game, Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart led the team down the field on a seven-play 65-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard Dart touchdown score, giving the Giants a 32-30 lead with 37 seconds remaining. Denver’s offense still managed to gain chunks of yards on two long passes, which set them up to make a game-winning Wil Lutz 39-yard field goal as time expired.
Giants kicker Jude McAtamney, filling in for Graham Gano (groin strain) missed 2 extra points. His last miss would have given the Giants a 3-point lead that would have sent the game into overtime had Denver converted the field goal. Said McAtamney after, “it’s on me. I missed vital points at vital times today. I’m not going to shy away from that.”
“Right now it’s just really frustrating,” Dart said after the game. “I’m trying to put it all together. We had chances to win the game, didn’t do it, it’s frustrating.” Dart threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth. “We played amazing for three quarters,” said Giants linebacker Brian Burns. “The fourth quarter wasn’t enough. We gave up what? 33 points in the fourth quarter?” The Giants are the first team in NFL history to lose a game when leading by 18 points or more with under six minutes to go.
Which New York Giants team will show up is anybody’s guess when they travel to Philadelphia to face division rival Eagles. The Giants embarrassed Philly 2 weeks ago in the 34-17 win. The Eagles are coming off a road win 28-22 over the Minnesota Vikings.
