No. 7 seed Providence Friars, hoping to boost its NCAA tournament profile, in which it did the night prior by defeating the #2 seed Creighton Bluejays behind a 22 point performance from the 2023-2024 conference player of the year, Devin Carter, were unable to advance to the next round as they were defeated by #2 seed Marquette Golden Eagles 78-69 in the semifinals of the 2024 Big East Tournament last Friday, March 15th.

The Friars trailed by as many as 17 in the first half and 11 points at intermission. Providence cut the deficit to 68-66 with 3:39 left to play following the first of two free throw attempts from Carter, who scored a game-high 27 points. Carter missed the second attempt and Marquette finished the game on an 11-2 run to secure its second straight appearance in the Big East tournament championship game to face the defending national champions, No.1 seed UConn Huskies, Saturday night.

Kam Jones and Oso Ighodaro scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, for Marquette in the win. Regardless of the outcome against UConn, Marquette is expected to receive a high seed in the NCAA Tournament. Providence awaited its fate last Sunday when the selection committee pick the teams who will be participating in March Madness.
