The Education Department is weighing the idea of allowing states to federally fund guns for schools, eliciting a storm of criticism from many. The plan would obviously generate a lot of controversy, especially after a string of deadly school shootings earlier this year.

The agency is reviewing legislation to see if the money can be allocated for this cause. The bipartisan Every Student Success Act, which was passed in 2015, does not directly prohibit or allow the use of Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants for the purchase of firearms.

An official said the agency received several letters asking it to clarify what those funds could be used for and began researching the issue. The results may be surprising, considering Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who chairs a federal commission on school safety, has previously said that schools should have the option to arm teachers.
