The New York Giants lost 38-20 in their second meeting this season, with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

New York had high hopes and things looked promising after defeating their NFC rivals Oct. 9. However, they fell behind early Sunday as Philadelphia took the lead and then a devastating turn happened as rookie leader running back Cam Skattebo was tackled reaching for a pass in the second quarter, suffered a serious ankle injury and was carted off the field.

“Feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll. “You feel for anybody on your team that goes down and has a really bad injury.” Photographs of the injury taken on the sideline by New York Beacon field photographer Michael Henriquez showed a twisted ankle.

“Surgery went well,” Skattebo posted on X. Monday. “I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way.”

Coach Daboll updated media on Monday. He also said the surgery went well and said Skattebo was recovering and would be missed.

“It’s my boy, man, so seeing him go down and obviously reacting to what happened, that sucks,” quarterback Jaxson Dart said Sunday. “It’s the worst part of this game.”

The Giants deferred after winning the coin toss and the Eagles received. Philadelphia was on the scoreboard in less than a game minute after Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts handed the ball to running back Saquon Barkley who rushed for a 65-yard touchdown. He received a 9-yard pass from Hurts in the second quarter and ran in for another touchdown. He left the game at the end of the third quarter with a groin injury. Hurts threw three other touchdowns, passing two to tight end Dallas Goedert and one to wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Eagles Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made one field goal.

New York’s first possession was short lived, but Dart quickly worked the ball down the field on their second possession. He used his legs, connected with Skattebo and made a 19-yard connection with wide receiver Darius Slayton. Slayton was pushed out of bounds in the red-zone, setting up for Skattebo’s touchdown after a 18-yard pass from Dart.

“It felt good, being able to get back into it, kind of get tackled that first time and get that first bump back and kind of get the jitters off you,” Slayton said.

Slayton had just returned to play against the Eagles after sitting out two games for a hamstring injury.

“We just came up short, but it’s good to have him out there,” Coach Daboll said about Slayton’s return.

The Giants trailed 21-10 at halftime after a field goal by kicker Graham Gano in the second quarter. Gano made another field goal in the third quarter. Dart used his legs to run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Gano kicked the extra point.

Dart completed 14 of 24 passes for 193 yards and was sacked five times. He said he didn’t feel pressure for their second meeting against the Eagles. He gives them credit. “I thought that they had a good plan for us coming into the game offensively and defensively,” Dart said. Hurts completed 15 of 20 passes for 179 yards for the Eagles and was sacked by Giants defense four times.

The Giants now 2-6 host the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in the Meadowlands.
