New York Liberty’s newest edition and first round draft pick, guard Sabrina Ionescu sustained an ankle injury in last Friday night’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream when she collided with forward Betnijah Laney of the Dream. Ionescu fell to the court in obvious pain and had to be helped off the court by teammates.  Ionescu’s injury was classified as a Grade 3 ankle sprain. Said New York Liberty head coach Walt Hopkins, “it’s a massive loss.” The injury comes just three games into an already COVID19 shortened WNBA season. Ionescu is expected to miss at least three weeks.

In addition to the injury, the Liberty suffered their third loss of the season, 84-78. It was followed by a disappointing fourth straight loss (96-67) in their August 2nd meeting against the Phoenix Mercury. Ionescu season debut was not memorable as she only scored 12 points missing all 8 of her 3-point attempts. She followed that up by scoring 33 points in 34 minutes showing why she was the #1 pick in the WNBA draft. It was bittersweet as the Liberty fell to Dallas Wings 93-80.

The Liberty continued the hunt for their first victory of the season when they faced the Minnesota Lynx led by former Liberty Head Coach Katie Smith this last night.
