Well, at least the New York Jets broke their 5 game streak of not coming up with a turnover when they faced the Denver Broncos in London last Sunday. In the end however, their losing streak was extended to 6 games as they lost 13-11 in which they only got on the scoreboard by kicking 3 field goals and a safety. The defense did it’s part but once again, the offense was nowhere to be found.
The Broncos got the ball to start the game and 3 plays later, the Jets turnover drought came to an end. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix throws a short pass to wide reciever Troy Franklin who is hit immediately by Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood and cornerback Jarvis Brownlee, Jr causing the fumble. Safety Andre Cisco recovers the fumble on the Denver 37 yard line. The Jets wasted the good field position as Jets quarterback would get sacked, only gainig 3-yards. The result was a Nick Folk 52-yard field goal and a early 3-0 lead.
Denver marched down the field the next time they got the ball and the Jets defense held them to a game tying field goal as Broncos Wil Lutz nails a 57 yard field goal. The Jets special team would come up big on the ensuing kickoff. Running back Kene Nwangwu recieved the ball on his own 4-yard line and 72-yards later, he gets pushed out at the Broncos 24 yard line. The offense stalled once again as they had to settle for another Folk field goal of 41 yards. Denver responded by scoring the only touchdown of the game. 9 plays and 69 yards later, Nix finds tight end Nate Adkins for a 16-yard touchdown as the first quarter came to an end and a 10-6 lead.
The second quarter was a push as both teams punted twice when the Jets kicked their third and final field goal (Folk 38 yards) cutting the lead to 10-9. After trading punts, the Jets had the the Broncos deep in their territory. Looking to pass out of his own end zone, Nix pass fell incomplete as a holding penalty was called aginst Denver’s guard Quinn Meinerz which resulted in a safety and a 11-10 Gang Green lead.
From that point on, the Broncos suffocated Fields and the offense. The Jets punted the next 3 times before Denver would drive down the field for the game winning field goal. 12 plays and 65 yards later, Lutz kicks the 27-yard field goal. With 5:06 left in the game, the Jets just need to get into field goal range to end the losing streak. Just as they came up short against Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, they would come up short against Denver.
Needing 10-yards for a first down to keep the drive going, Fields gets sacked forcing the Jets to punt. The defense stepped up again getting the offense the ball back as Denver went 3 and out. Fields is sacked twice before time expired as the losing streak continued. By games end, Fields was sacked 9 times as he completed 9 of 17 passes for a putrid 45 yards and a -10 net passing yards.
Another week and another loss for first year head coach and ex-Jets player Aaron Glenn. “Disappointing game,” Glenn began. “I mean, I thought our guys fought their asses off. Obviously wasn’t good enough. It’s tough being close. At some point we’ve got to finish one of these here.” Of the offensive struggles throughout the game, Glenn said, “our passing game was nonexistent. That’s something we have to get better at.”
The New York Jets host the Carolina Panthers (3-3) next Sunday. The Panthers are coming off a big win over the Dallas Cowboys as they kicked a last second field goal in the 30-27 win.
