Yolanda Renee King attended a cotillion and prom in a single weekend
The 17-year-old student attended prom over the weekend. She took to Instagram to share a photo of herself posing with her date and wearing a black lace gown.
King also participated in the Ivy Community Foundation Pink Cultured Pearls Cotillion hosted at the Georgia International Convention Center on Sunday.
“Walking out and seeing everyone smiling and cheering for us… I felt so supported,” she told Essence in an interview. “And then looking at the other girls and realizing we did this together. That feeling of sisterhood was everything. These are my forever sisters now.”
For the occasion, King wore a long white gown and a matching tiara. Cotillions are events organized for young women to socialize and teach them ballroom etiquette. It is often followed by a debutante ball, which represents a young woman’s entrance into society. The tradition has been upheld for centuries among European royals and the upper class. These events have been popularized in modern television series like Bridgerton and Gossip Girl.
A cotillion requires a lengthy preparation such as rehearsals, choreography, posture and socializing events leading up to the main day.
“I didn’t realize how intense it was,” King said. “It feels like I was organizing different parts of myself. Putting things into compartments so I can be presented into society.”
“It taught me that I can stick with something even when it feels like a lot,” she added. “There were days I was tired or overwhelmed, but I kept showing up. And now I see that I’m stronger and more focused than I thought.”
King highlighted her appreciation for old school tradition and reflected on the legacy left by the women who attended cotillions before her.
“Tonight made it feel real,” she said. “I was thinking about my family and all the women who have come before me… and looking around at the girls beside me, knowing we’re all stepping into this together.”
