Another All-Star Game For James

The days of simply trotting out superstars onto the hardwood and exhibiting their extreme hops and shooting skills are over. The Olympic Games and fierce competition in International tournaments for Baseball and Hockey have pushed NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to reinvent the All-Star Game and its innovative unveiling will be at the beautiful new Intuit Dome in Los Angeles for the 2026 Winter Classic.

A completely different format has casual ball watchers and All-Star Game haters keeping an eye on this year’s normally drab affair. Playing off of the USA vs the World competition that has become so due to the global success of the NBA, in 2026 there will be a round robin tournament consisting of three teams, two American teams and another filled with the best foreign born All-stars.

Americans selected to the All-Star pool have been broken up into two teams, with the Stars team featuring Anthony Edwards Cade Cunningham and Philadelphia legend in the making, Tyrese Maxey. Their counterparts, the Stripes squad, will be led by Knicks hero and Captain Jalen Brunson along with LeBron James Kevin Durant and two-time All Star Game MVP Stephen Curry. Unfortunately, it was announced earlier in the week that Curry will not play due to a knee injury.

As stacked as the roster for the American teams are, don’t discount the ability of the rest of the globe to gift the Association with unbelievable unique talent. The world has never seen anything like 12-minute pick up style games, with an international squad sporting the likes of Greece’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Slovenia’s Luka Dončić, Serbia’s Nikola Jokić, France’s Victor Wembanyama, and the Knicks’ own Karl Anthony Towns representing the Dominican Republic.

USA vs the World in a three team Round Robin format of 12-minute games will either be a genius innovation bringing a much needed spark to the NBA All Star Game, or a swing and miss leading to another possible solution in the future. Whichever is the case, Sunday night will be a must watch as to the state of the Association, and the hopes of finding similar success in popularity to the NBA Cup.

The championship game will feature the respective two teams which hold the best records after the round robin, and should there be a tie, the deciding factor would be the margin of victory in each win.

After 74 mostly traditional All-Star Games, the 2026 variety will if nothing else be unique not only to basketball, but to all professional leagues who maybe begin to follow suit if the NBA finds gold. NBC and Peacock will be broadcasting the 75th NBA All Star Game from the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California starting at 5 pm EST.
