The Brooklyn Nets lost to the New York Knicks 113-100 at Barclays Center in their second matchup this season.
The Nets fought hard, with an impressive start led by Noah Clowney, but fell behind in the second quarter. Brooklyn tied the game after halftime, but New York pushed ahead in the third and kept the lead to win.
“I thought we started with the right intentions,” said Nets Head Coach Jordi Fernández. “The energy was there and then as the game went on I thought that our energy and purpose started to fade.”
Brooklyn led 26-24 at the end of the first quarter, trailed 51-48 at halftime, tied the score at 51 in the third quarter and were behind 89-75 at the start of the fourth quarter. Brooklyn outscored New York 25-24 in the final quarter.
“Winning the first quarter and the last quarter, it’s not enough,” Coach Jordi Fernández said.
The Nets were ahead 23-22 with less than 1:10 on the clock in the first quarter after a shot from Noah Clowney. The Knicks scored, but Clowney pushed Brooklyn head again, 26-24, with a 3-pointer before the buzzer. He said the Nets were “locked-in” when asked about the difference during the first quarter.
“Only allowed 24 points,” he said about the first quarter. “Then in the third quarter we let them score 38. That’s the difference in the game, ” said Fernandez
Knicks first year Head Coach Mike Brown said the Knicks fouled too much in the first half of the game, but gave credit to Coach Fernández for Brooklyn’s success in the first quarter.
“He’s doing a heck of a job with that team while they’re going through, whatever process they’re going through,” Brown said. “We just got a little handsy, a little too physical where we were bumping guys on their shots and we’re sending them to the free-throw line.”
By half time the Nets had made 13 of 17 free throws. Clowney led Brooklyn with 31 points in the game and Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with a game high 37-points.
“Some positive and good things, but you know, we got to move on,” Coach Fernández said.
The Nets have some time to re-compose before their next game against the Philadelphia 76ers Friday.
