Fields Benched In Loss To Panthers

Taylor No Answer Off The Bench

Didn’t matter who was the qaurterback for the New York Jets. The result was the same. The Gang Green offense, once again, was offensive. In losing to the Carolina Panthers 13-6, the Jets could only muster 2 field goals. Looking to spark their anemic offense, first year head coach Aaron Glenn benched starting qiuarterback Justin Fields (6-12, 46 yards, 2 sacks) and replaced him with veteran Tyrod Taylor to start the second half. Taylor (10-22, 126 yards, 2 int’s) could not get the Jets in the end zone in the loss as the losing streak reached 7.
Glenn vehemtly defended Fields after his performance in London losing 13-11 to the Denver Broncos. When asked if he planned on making a quarterback change Glenn said, “I don’t think you just try to bench a player after having one true bad game. Because I thought the other games he played fairly well.”
It only took the first half for Glenn to make the change. “I felt that it was the right time to do it,” Glenn explained. “It’s a tough situation for both of those guys, but it was my call. It was my call and I felt it was the right time to do it.”
The Panther were coming off a thrilling win over the Dallas Cowboys the week before 30-27 and were looking for their third straight win. Carolina took a 10-3 halftime lead behind quarterback Bryce Young. Unfortunately for Young, he was unable to finish the game as he suffered a ankle injury late in the tird quarter. It didn’t matter however as the Jets could not establish anything offensively. Taylor was intercepted twice and the running game was non-exsistent as they only gained 81 yards on 20 carries.
Said Glenn of the offensive struggles, “we have a lot of work to do and that speaks for irself. We all know that.” As far as who will be the starting quarterback when the Jets travel to Cincinnati to play the Bengals Sunday, Glenn did not commit to Fields or Taylor. “When it goes into next week, I’m not ready to sit here and and say what’s going to happen with our quarterbacks. That’s something I have to look at.”
Fields understood the benching saying, “I can’t blame him,” speaking of Glenn. “We scored like 3 points in the first half. So it is, what it is. That’s life. Of course I wish things could have gone a little bit different. Not only for me, but for this team.”
Coming into the 2025 season, the New York Jets expected to go through growing pains with a new head coach and a quarterback. Aside from the Buffalo Bills, no other team in their division has played well. Miami is 1-7. The Patriots have surprised everyone at 5-2. The Jets are 0-7 and have found every conceivable way to lose. The organization has had some very disappointing years. This year is turning out to be one their worst.
