Rough Start For Wilson

All the good feelings the New York Football Giants established by going undefeated (3-0) in the preseason quickly disappeared when they faced the Washington Commanders last Sunday at Fed Ex Field. Washington came within one game of getting to the Super Bowl last year losing to the eventual winner Philadelphia Eagles.
In the 21-6 loss, the Giants behind veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, the Giants only scored 2 field goals as Wilson was under pressure all game. By games end, Wilson completed a dismal 17 of 37 passes for only 168 yards and no touchdowns. He was sacked 2 times and had a quarterback rating of 59.3. The defense wasn’t any better as they allowed the Commanders run roughshod over them. Washington rushed for 220 yards on 32 carries. When they were not stopping the run, the Giants allowed Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels to throw for 233 yards as he connected on 19 of 30 passes and 1 touchdown. he finished the day with a quarterback rating of 98.3.
The Big Blue running game was non-exsistant as they only gained 74 yards with Wilson leading the team with 44 yards. Said Wilson of his and the team’s performance, “the game was simple in that we didn’t convert in the red zone. When the ball is on the 1-, 2-yard line, we have to score. They stopped us. That changes the entire complexion of the game.”
Wilson was not sharp at all as he missed open recievers. Passes were either underthrown or overthrown. The offensive line was pushed up and down all game given Wilson no chance to complete passes. The offensive coordinator play selection was suspect as well. Head coach Brian Daboll who suprisingly was retained after a dismall last season, said “we were right there until the end. It’s a collective deal. We can all do better.”
Despite his struggle, Daboll announced that Wilson will start the next game as the road doesn’t get any easier for the Giants as they travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys who lost their opener to the Eagles last Thursday night to kick off the 2025 season. Said Daboll, “that game doesn’t fall on Russell Wilson. We got to do a better job collectively, coaching and playing but Russ will be the starter.”
At least New York will not have to deal with defensive end Micah Parsons who was traded to the Green Bay Packers a week before the start of the season.
