The 2025 US Open, the last official Grand Slam kicked off this past Sunday in Flushing Queens and it didn’t take long for top seeds in the USA men draw to establish themselves. #4 seed Taylor Fritz and #6 seed Ben Shelton took out their opponents in straight sets. #7 Serbia’s Novak Djokovic did the same. He has not won a Grand Slam in 2 years. He is attempting to win his 25th Grand Slam Title. The first upset on the men’s side saw veteran and #13 seed Daniil Medvedev lose to unseeded Benjamin Bonzi in 5 sets. Medvedev took out his frustration on his racquet slamming it to pieces after the match. Two other USA players advanced. Unseeded Zachary Svajda and Eliot Spizzirri advanced winning in straight sets.
On the USA women’s side, #4 Jessica Pegula, #10 Emma Navarro and #32 McCartney Kessler advanced in straight sets. Unseeded Hina Inoue fell to Victoria Azarenka. Monday saw the first upset on the women’s draw as #6 seed Madison Keys, who was expected to go deep in tournament, loses to unranked Mexican Renata Zarazua in 3 sets. Later that night, the crowd gave a standing, roaring ovation when Venus Williams was introduced to the sold out crowd. Unfortunately, the crowd could not will her to victory as she fell in 3 sets to #11 Karolina Muchova. Said Williams after, “I think for me, getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy. When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind. It’s not just how you feel. You get stuck in your mind too. So it was nice to be freer.”
#2 men’s seed Carlos Alcaraz won Monday in straight while #1 seed Yannick Sinner, who had to withdraw for his previous tournament in Cincinnati, played Tuesday afternoon and made easy work of Vit Kopriva winning in 3 sets. Women’s seeds #2 lga Swiatek and #3 American Coco Gauff also played Tuesday.
