When the New Knicks hosted the Dallas Mavericks Monday night at Madison Sqaure Garden Tuesday night they were catching them at the right time. First, it was the second straight night Dallas had played after beating the Nets Monday night at Barclays Center. Secondly, it was only the second game newly acquired forward Anthony Davis suited up after missing 18 previous games with strained abductor muscle. It was also his second time playing for Dallas. Finally, Dallas was without their talented guard Kyrie Irving out for the rest of the year with torn ACL in his left knee. The Knicks were well rested as they hadn’t played since the previous Saturday, coming away with a win against the Washington Wizards.
The Knicks looked the freshest of the two teams as they jumped out to an early 12-5 lead forcing Mass head coach Jason Kidd to call his first time out with 8:54 in the first quarter. Whatever Kidd said hit a nerve as Dallas went on to outscored New 30-25 for the remainder of the quarter to only trail by 2 at 37-35. Maverick’s Naji Marshall led all scorers with 12 points while Karl Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby scored 10 each. Dallas shot 71% from the floor and 50% from 3-point land. New York converted on 65% from the floor and 40% from 3-point land.
The Knicks extended their lead to 7-points 46-39 with 8:29 but Dallas refused to go away as they went into halftime tied at 68. Towns exploded for 14 second quarter points. Marshall continued to scorch the Knicks as he scored 16 points.
New York came out and began the third quarter like they started the first outscoring Dallas 9-0 to take a 77-68 lead. Once again, the Mavericks cut the lead to 6 (79-73). Then, Mikal Bridges then nailed a 3-pointer and followed it up with a 2-pointer converting the free throw after getting fouled giving the Knicks its biggest lead of the night at 85-73. There would be no Dallas comeback as the Knicks ran away with the 128-113 rout.
Mavericks Marshall finished with a game high 38 points. Brandon Williams came off the bench pitching in 22. New York had 6 players in double figures with two players (Precious Achiuwa and Landry Shamet) scoring 11 each off the bench. Anunoby led the Knicks with 35. Towns and Josh Hart made franchise history as they became the first 2 Knicks players to record a triple double in the same game. Pretty amazing given all of the great players that have worn the orange and blue over the years.
It will be a quick turnaround by the Knicks as they host the Los Angeles Clippers tonight.
