Michael “MJ” Dixon, a 12-year-old boy from Killeen, Texas, has emerged victorious from a three-year battle with leukemia. Diagnosed at the age of eight, MJ faced a daunting prognosis with a mere 23% chance of survival due to the scarcity of bone marrow matches within his racial and blood type group. However, defying these odds, MJ successfully overcame the disease through a combination of unwavering determination, cutting-edge medical treatments, and unwavering support from his family and community.
The journey was arduous, filled with numerous rounds of chemotherapy that robbed MJ of his mobility, friendships, and even his beloved locs. His mother, Chaundra Dixon, made the courageous decision to enroll him in a clinical trial for a drug called Blinatumomab when conventional treatments proved ineffective. This unconventional approach ultimately proved successful in destroying his cancer cells.
Chaundra Dixon attributes MJ’s recovery to their unwavering faith and the outpouring of support from their community. Notably, rapper Lil Boosie, a cancer survivor himself, offered invaluable encouragement, actively participating in donor match events and contributing to medical expenses.
MJ’s triumph serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for other children battling cancer. He continues to inspire others with his message of perseverance, urging them to “keep fighting, don’t give up, eat healthy, eat fruits and vegetables. Don’t give up and just be you.”
Following his successful treatment, MJ celebrated his victory by ringing the bell at Baylor Scott & White, a symbolic gesture signifying the end of his medical journey. As a testament to his compassionate spirit, MJ and his family donated over $2,000 worth of toys to fellow young cancer patients at the hospital, further exemplifying his unwavering belief in the power of giving back.
