An argument over a bag of potato chips led to an unprovoked shooting outside an Akron nightclub last year, a crime that has now resulted in a prison sentence. Melvin Wright Jr., 43, was sentenced this week to nine to 12 years behind bars for shooting Jacob Hicks in the face after Hicks declined to share his chips. The incident, which occurred on November 28, 2023, shocked the community for its trivial cause and senseless violence.
The altercation began outside Lusty’s Adventure, a nightclub on Stanton Street, where Wright approached Hicks, who was sitting in his car enjoying a snack. Prosecutors said Wright asked for some of the chips, but Hicks declined. What should have been a minor rejection quickly escalated when Wright pulled out a handgun and fired at Hicks, striking him in the face.
Despite his injuries, Hicks managed to drive himself to Akron City Hospital, where he received emergency treatment and recounted the incident to police. Hicks spent six days in recovery, and prosecutors noted his courage throughout the process. “The survivor’s resilience in this case is remarkable,” said Summit County Prosecutor Kolkovich.
Wright, who pleaded guilty to charges including attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm, was also ordered to register as a violent offender for 10 years after his release. His prior criminal record, which disqualified him from legally owning a firearm, further compounded his sentence. Prosecutors highlighted the importance of holding Wright accountable to protect public safety.
“Summit County is safer without Melvin Wright on our streets,” Kolkovich said in a statement. “Senseless violence like this has no place in our community. I commend the efforts of my team and local law enforcement in securing justice for the victim.” The case has drawn attention as a stark reminder of how minor disputes can spiral into acts of life-altering violence.
