You just can’t make this kind of stuff up. The New York Football Giants were hoping to rebound after their embarrassing home opening loss to the Minnesota Vikings the previous Sunday. They traveled to Washington this past Sunday to face their division rival Commanders. The Giants won the coin toss and elected to defer to Washington a move that proved very costly. Graham Gano kick allowed Commanders running back Austin Ekeler to return the kick which he took it 98 yards into the end zone. A holding penalty voided the touchdown but Gano, in the attempt to run him down, fell to the turf blowing out his hamstring and was not able to return.
It would turn out to be a factor in the 21-18 loss as the team had no backup kicker for extra points or possible field goals. New York would score 3 touchdowns and not give up any Commander touchdowns as Washington converted 7 field goals. The Giants missed on 2, 2-point conversions as Daniel Jones (16-28, 178, 2 td’s) had another pedestrian performance. Defensively, Big Blue could not contain the Washington running game giving up 215 total yards as Commanders running back Brian Robinson, Jr torched them for 133 yards on 17 carries.
Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers did all he could, finishing his day with 10 catches 127 yards and 1 touchdown. Nabers said after, “I’m disappointed. No matter how good of a game you can play, that last play came down to me. I’m hurt that I let those veterans down,” talking about his fourth down dropped pass which gave the ball back to Washington.
It was the first win for Washington’s rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels as he finished his day completing 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards. “I feel blessed,” Daniels said. “Can’t really complain. It wasn’t the prettiest game, but a win is a win.” Commanders field goal kicker Austin Siebert converted all 7 field goals from 27, 45, 26, 27, 29 and 30 yards out. He replaced Cade York, who missed each of his two attempts in the season opener. Said Siebert, “no reason to make it bigger than it is. Just go out there and do what I do.”
Frustrated New York Giants third year head coach Brian Daboll was seen slamming his head set on the ground after the game winning field goal. Said Daboll after the game, “we’ll learn from things from one week to the next and keep improving.”
That will remain to be seen as they travel to Cleveland (1-1) to face the Browns who are coming off a 18-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
