Being the child of a former U.S. president often brings heightened attention and public scrutiny. Although it has been seven years since Barack Obama left the White House, his daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, continue to attract media coverage. Despite leading relatively private lives, they occasionally make headlines, sometimes for actions as mundane as going about their day. Such was the case when Sasha Obama, now 23, was photographed in Los Angeles traffic last Friday, with a cigarette in hand, reigniting online discussions about her lifestyle choices.

The photo quickly went viral on social media, leading to a flurry of reactions. One post, shared by an X user and apparent Trump supporter, not only criticized Sasha but also took aim at Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, and Ella Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter. The user juxtaposed their images with a polished photo of Barron Trump, suggesting that the upbringing of the Obama, Biden, and Harris children somehow paled in comparison to that of the former president’s youngest son. Despite garnering over 152,000 likes, the post drew significant backlash, with many users coming to Sasha’s defense, pointing out that smoking as an adult is not a scandalous act.

Sasha and her older sister Malia, 26, have both been seen smoking on occasion, a habit they may have inherited from their father. In his 2020 memoir, A Promised Land, Barack Obama candidly reflected on his struggle to quit smoking, sharing that he once smoked up to 10 cigarettes a day. He eventually kicked the habit, largely motivated by a disapproving look from Malia after she smelled cigarette smoke on him. While the former president managed to quit with the help of nicotine gum, he admitted that it remained a struggle for years, a battle familiar to many smokers.
