In a case that has shocked Indianapolis, an Uber driver, Francisco Valadez, was arrested on Sept. 10 for the rape and murder of his passenger, 30-year-old Chanti Dixon. Initially, Valadez claimed that an armed Black man shot Dixon during a robbery gone wrong, but detectives quickly saw through his fabricated story. Evidence from Dixon’s cellphones, which her family had tracked, led police to Valadez, who eventually confessed to the horrific crime. According to court documents, Valadez admitted to shooting Dixon after an argument and attempting to cover up the murder by disposing of her body in a wooded area.
Dixon, a mother of two, had called an Uber after finishing her late shift on the night of Sept. 8. When she failed to return home, her worried family traced her phone to a wooded area behind her residence, where they discovered her body. Investigators determined that Dixon had been shot in the head and that her phones held crucial clues to her final moments. They revealed she had made a stop with Valadez before arriving home. Detectives quickly located and arrested him, uncovering further evidence in his vehicle, including what is believed to be the murder weapon.
During interrogation, Valadez initially maintained his fabricated story about a Black assailant but eventually admitted to the crime, revealing chilling details of his actions. The case has left Dixon’s family and community devastated. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey expressed his outrage, calling the crime “an evil act” and commending the swift police work that led to Valadez’s arrest. Dixon is remembered by friends and family as a loving mother and joyful spirit, whose life was tragically cut short.
