The Jets finished their preseason schedule last Saturday night with a game against the Giants at the Meadowlands. Both teams sat out all their starters, which has to make one think what the point is to scheduling preseason games anymore? As final NFL cuts come this week most of the players who participated in this game will not be on these current rosters next week when the season begins for real. Fans still had to pay the hefty price to get into the building to see a game that produced a mere 16 points between the two teams with the Jets winning 10-6.
Jets running back Israel Abanikanda from Brooklyn had the only play that made anyone jump out of their seat all night with a magnificent 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which saw him spin, break a tackle, and out run everyone into the end zone. Abanikanda is entering his second season after being selected by the Jets out of the University of Pittsburgh in 2023. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Coney Island. The next time the Jets will be on the field will be Monday night September 9th at San Francisco against the 49ers where quarterback Aaron Rodgers will start. He, coach Robert Saleh and the entire organization are expecting big things this year.
Daniel Jones did not play and watched starting quarterback Tommy De Vito get sacked 8 times. Said De Vito who completed 17 of 27 passes for 103 yards, “they did a lot more than I was expecting,” he began. “I think we were ready for it, but they started amping up a lot of pressure, (including a) left corner blitz. I think literally they did that probably on the second drive. It was a little unexpected.” Making matter worse was the injuries that hit team. Defensive tackle Timmy Horne was carted from the field with an Achilles tendon injury after the defense’s first snap. Offensive tackle Evan Neal left in the first half with an ankle injury, but declared he was ok after the game. Linebacker Ovie Oghoufo and Cornerback Mario Goodrich each injured a hamstring in the first half and didn’t return. Offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield (lower leg/ankle) and CB Darnay Holmes (neck) left in the fourth quarter.
Big Blue opens the 2024 season hosting the Minnesota Vikings September 8th. The team they beat in the wild card game 2 years ago.
