The New York Yankees were back on the field Tuesday night hosting the Baltimore Orioles. It was the second game since the ugly game ending incident Saturday afternoon when they came from behind to beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-4. It began when lsiah Kiner-Falefa tied the game with a double. Cleveland’s left fielder Steven Kwan, attempting to make a play, slammed into the wall. Guardians center fielder Myles Straw goes to assist Kwan and objects to fans in the right field bleachers comments. Straw climbs the wall to confront the fans. When Gleyber Torres follows that up with the game winning hit, fans begin to throw trash and empty beer cans on the field in the direction of the players. One umpire was hit trying to play peacemaker. At one point, several Yankees which included Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton raced out to right field attempting to calm the crowd down.
Said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, “obviously there’s no place for throwing stuff on the field. Obviously, we certainly don’t want to put anybody in danger. Love the intensity, but can’t be throwing stuff out on the field.” Said Myles, “brutal. Worst fan base on the planet.”
New York completed the Cleveland sweep routing them 10-2 as Gerrit Cole had his best outing of the year. Cole pitched 6.2 innings giving up 4 hits and striking out 9. The Yankees began the series against the Orioles in second place with a 10-6 record. Boone is hoping that Cole has turned the corner and can start putting solid consecutive starts together.
After the Orioles, the Yankees host a 3-game series against the Kansas City Royals before traveling to Toronto to face the first place Blue Jays.
