Following the city’s plans for a monument in honor of Ida B. Wells, a street will be renamed for her as well. The city council has decided to rename Congress Parkway to Ida B. Wells Drive. It will be the first street downtown to be named after a woman of color.

It is an important step in remembering women of color who had such a large impact on the country, and are often forgotten. Wells fought for women’s voting rights and started groups to help people of color gain more political and economic power.

Her monument as well as her newly minted street will serve as a reminder of her intelligence and dedication to making the country better, something we could use a lot of right now.
