When the New York Yankees took the field Tuesday night to start a 3 games series in Tampa to face the second place Rays, they were coming off a 4 game series against the Boston Red Sox. It was an ugly series for the Bronx Bombers who lost 3 of the 4 games. New York had a chance to split the series after coming from behind to win the Saturday matinee. Sunday’s starter Domingo German was pitching a gem being staked to a 4-0 lead. He had not given up a hit through the first 7 innings until he allowed a single in the 8th. Manager Aaron Boone, aware of the pitch count, pulled German and watched as the bullpen implode. Boston scored 5 runs in the final two innings for the come from behind victory. Said Boone after, “really tough one. Domingo was terrific.”

The two teams have faced each other 13 times this year with Boston winning 10 of those times. The Red Sox have shown their is no quit in their team as they lead the major leauges with 32 come from behind victories. The Yankees loss put them 9 games behind Boston with 6 games left in the regular season. Three times this year New Yotk has had a lead of 4 runs or more only to end up losing. The Yankees welcomed back third baseman Gio Urshela who was out due to Covid19. Aaron Judge missed the enitre series due to Covid19 as well. Said Boone of the possible return of Judge, “he will fly with us to Tampa and he’lll get his work down in Tampa and have a workout day Monday in Tampa.”

New York has had trouble with both the Red Sox and Rays losing 18 times with only 8 victories. Still, Boone has not lost faith in his team. “These guys have handled and dealt with adversity,’’ Boone said. “I know we’ll (handle it) again.’’

The Major League Trade deadline is Friday and President and General Manager Brian Cashman will be looking to bolster the bullpen as it was reported that Cashman made an offer to add reliever Trevor Story from Colorado. They did add reliever Clay Holmes from Pittsburgh. Adding a lefthanded bat could help an offense that has struggled with runners on base.
