The New York Jets defeated the Atlanta Falcons 27-24 to win their third game of the season Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Kicker Nick Folk nailed a 56-yard field goal in the last few seconds breaking a tie between the teams ending the game. The Jets fought back against the Falcons throughout the game to reach the moment, and were led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor who ran for the final touchdown before the kick.
“It felt amazing,” Taylor said. “It wasn’t a perfect game by any means, but we speak about our brand of football and being complimentary to one another, all three phases, and I think this was a perfect game to show that.”
Taylor completed 19 of 33 passes for 172 yards and QB Kirk Cousins threw 21 of 33 passes for 234 yards for the Falcons.
The two teams were scoreless in the first quarter.
“You talk about back and forth,” said New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn. “Our guys being able to just gut this game out. I keep saying there’s no quit in these guys.”
Cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers recovered the ball for the Jets following a muffed punt by Falcons wide receiver Jamal Agnew during the start of the second quarter. Jets running back Breece Hall then rushed for the first touchdown of the game.
Cousins handed the ball to running back Tyler Allgeier, who ran for a touchdown at the end of the second quarter. Kicker Zane Gonzalez added the extra point and teams were tied at seven at halftime.
Taylor connected with WR Adonai Mitchell on a 52-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and the kick by Folk was good for the extra point. Folk missed one field goal attempt in the third quarter but redeemed himself in the fourth.
WR Isaiah Williams ran for an 83-yard kick return that set the stage for Folk’s field goal at the start of the fourth. Folk then kicked the extra point following Taylor’s touchdown run and then kicked the field goal that won the game.
“I don’t know if there was much,” Folk said when asked about the pressure of the final kick. “I don’t really think a whole ton, just kind of go through normal process, normal routine. Great snap by Henny (Thomas Hennessy). Great hold by Austin(Austin McNamara). The big guys did a great job.”
The Jets next take on the Miami Dolphins at home Sunday afternoon.
“Enjoy it today, but come Wednesday, when we are back in the building, come back to work,” Williams said.
“Anytime you can play a division opponent at home, hopefully we can put a good game together like we did today, complimentary football, and pull out a win,” Folk said.
The Jets hope for a win following a 27-21 loss to the Dolphins Sept. 29.
