Fields Showed Promise ln Loss To Pittsburgh

It was a close game and exciting matchup but ultimately a loss for the New York Jets, who fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-32, Sunday afternoon in the Meadowlands for their 2025 home-opener.
The Jets new quarterback Justin Fields had a good start for his first game throwing one touchdown and running for two other touchdowns himself, but so did Aaron Rodgers as he returned to MetLife stadium to lead his new team to victory. New York was ahead at halftime and throughout the third quarter, but a fumble at an inopportune time changed the trajectory of the game.
“Exciting game, but I’m not into moral victories,” said head coach Aaron Glenn. “I thought offensively, we did a lot of good things offensively that we can build on. The one thing to me that turned this game is, man, we can’t have turnovers.”
The Jets were on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a field goal by kicker Nick Folk. Rodgers threw the first touchdown pass of the game to Steelers wide receiver Ben Skowronek.
“Ben was wide open, so that was nice,” Rodgers said about the touchdown. “Good play call by Arthur (offensive coordinator Arthur Smith). We actually ran that play twice and had two touchdowns: one to Ben and one to Calvin(to wide receiver Calvin Austin III in the fourth quarter). I thought Arthur called a really good game. I thought I was far from perfect today so I have to clean some things up.”
Fields passed to former college teammate wide receiver Garrett Wilson for his first touchdown of the season in the first quarter. The attempt at the two-point conversion failed. Fields later in the second quarter hands off to running back Braelon Allen resulting in a touchdown. A field goal by Folk pushed the Jets ahead 19-17 before halftime.
According to Jets Communications punter Austin McNamara did not record a punt in the first half, marking the first time since at least 1991 the team did not punt in the first half.
Fields ran for a touchdown in the third quarter. Rodgers scored to start the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Xavier Gipson then fumbled on the kickoff return and Rodgers next threw another touchdown for the Steelers.
“I think we ran the ball well, offensive line did a great job,” Fields said. “I think we only had one sack, and that was in the red zone. I think as a team, I think we’re bouncing and kind of keeping each other in the fight. That one turnover they scored, offense we came back and we didn’t let that faze us.”
Fields completed nine of 11 passes for 134 yards and was sacked once. Rodgers completed 11 of 14 passes for 159 yards and was sacked four times by Jets defense. The Jets next take on the Buffalo Bills at home Sunday who are coming off their victory over the Baltimore Ravens after trailing by 15 points in the 4th quarter.
