The NC100BW Manhattan Chapter presents its 4th annual Spoken Word Production, “Poetic Justice: Women, Power, Politics and the Black Arts Movement” in tribute to the late Master Poet Maya Angelou honoring
Living Legend and Master Poet, Dr. Sonia Sanchez, on Thursday, February 22, 2017 from 7 to 9pm, in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium at the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway.
This year’s event also features Poets Toni Blackman and Christine Gilliam “PhyaStartah.” The program begins with African drumming and dancing paying tribute to the #Metoo and Black Arts Movements.
The evening’s readings include selections from Sanchez’s more than a dozen volumes of poetry, including “Does Your House Have Lions?” (1995), which was nominated for the NAACP Image and National Book Critics Circle Award, “Wounded in the House of a Friend” (1995) and “Homegirls and Handgrenades” (1984), which won an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation.
Poetic Justice honors and advocates for African American sisters and brothers who have suffered sexual abuse and assault, social injustices, domestic violence, oppression and discrimination. The creative platform provides exposure for Black professional female poets and spoken word artists, as well as a venue for educating and empowering all of us.
