The New York Knicks came from 22 points behind to tie the score in the fourth quarter, but a last second shot by Jalen Brunson rolled out of the rim at the buzzer as his team fell to the Chicago Bulls in a 124-123 loss Thursday night at Madison Square Garden .

24 points and eight assists from Brunson, in addition to a season-high 46 points, 10 rebounds and three steals from Karl-Anthony Towns, was impactful, but not enough for the win. New York was slow with scoring to start the game, but gained momentum and energy in the second half, as both teams fought regaining the lead in the fourth quarter.

“It’s hard to say,” said Knicks Head coach Tom Thibodeau about the slow start. “We had a back-to-back last night. Came in, got in a hole early, (and) fought to get back.”

New York bested the Philadelphia 76ers 111-99 on Tuesday night on the road. OG Anunoby led the team with 24 points. Wednesday night he blocked two shots and added 14 points.

“I like the mental toughness that we showed, to fight out ourselves in position to win the game,” Coach Thibodeau said about defense. “In the end, fell short.”

New York trailed 29-22 at the end of the first quarter, 59-47 at halftime and 90-85 at the end of the third quarter.

The Bulls played swiftly and aggressively in the first half, out-scoring the Knicks 29-22 in the first quarter and 30-25 in the second quarter. By halftime Chicago had made 52.5% of their shots from the field and New York made 41.3% of their shots from the field. Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 19 points by halftime and Brunson led the Knicks with 18 points. LaVine led Chicago with 31 total points in the game.

New York had a spark of energy after halftime and outscored Chicago 38-31. Bulls players only scored in the single digits in the third quarter alone, with a high of nine points from Coby White. Mikal Bridges had 10 points and Towns added 14 points. A swift driving dunk by Towns at the end of the quarter kept the energy going. A driving layup by Josh Hart pushed the Knicks ahead of the Bulls 97-96 in the fourth quarter.

The Knicks would take a 2-point lead with about 4 seconds remaining in the game after a Brunson layup. Chicago got the ball back and Coby White attempted a 3-pointer. Hart blocked his shot, but fouled him with about 3 seconds left in the game. White calmly made all three free throws for the 1-point victory. Afterwards, Hart blamed himself for the loss.

“Inexcusable mistake (by me),” Hart said. “(Nikola) Vucevic got a
good screen and I was kind of behind and felt like he (Colby White) had an open shot, so I went up and contested it and yeah, it was a foul.”

The Knicks next face the Brooklyn Nets on Friday and Sunday at home over the weekend.
