In the Hulu Theater of Madison Square Garden last Saturday night, the mecca of Boxing provided yet another dramatic show for the ages. Entering as a 13-1 underdog the Australian contender and now Champion George Kambosos Jr. rocked the former belt holder Teofimo Lopez, as well as the 95% contingency who vocally backed the young Latino star in the stands.

The heavily pro Lopez crowd hollered loudly for the Brooklyn born champ, but by the end of the night found themselves booing their beloved Honduran fighter. In only one hours time, Kambosos turned the sellout crowd at the Garden against Lopez while at the same time exposing a young undisputed champion.

From the opening bell both fighters showed off their skills, with Lopez attacking early after promising a first-round knockout and Kambosos flashing his ability to weather the offensive fury, going as far as scoring an early knockdown of a visibly shocked Lopez. Much of the rest of the night did not fare any more advantageous for Lopez as he continued to take damage from Kambosos who showed and proved his moniker ‘ferocious’.

Barring the 10th-round right hand that dropped Kambosos Jr. to the canvas, Lopez struggled to win the rounds and establish himself to win the fight. However, it did not stop him or his Father and Trainer Teofimo Lopez Sr. to declare themselves not only the winner, but taking 10 of the 12 rounds, which triggered the Garden crowd so viciously boo both the former champ and his father.

Possibly the most proud person after George Kambosos’ big win was none other than his legendary sparring partner, Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao took to social media to extend his congratulations and to say he hoped their hundreds of rounds of sparring contributed to him becoming a world champion.

As for what’s next for George Kambosos Jr., without a rematch clause in place he is free to take on the biggest fight available. The newly crowned champ had only one condition when asked about his next fight, he told Lopez and the Garden crowd regrading a rematch, “We can do it again in Australia in front of 80,000 people.”
